Is it time to upgrade your grinder?
In 2020, Mahlkonig released their Grind-by-Weight series and revolutionised the grinder technology in a way that felt like an absolute breakthrough. A grinder that could weigh the dose in real time and deliver precision grinding instead of guessing - it was quite literally the gold standard of its time.
But lately, coffee technology has continued to evolve, connecting bar workflow beyond our imagination. Accurately weighing coffee was just the beginning. Now, Mahlkonig has taken things a step further with their Grind by Sync System.
From Grind-by-Weight to Grind-by-Sync; sounds gimmicky, doesn’t it?
But here’s exactly why this evolution makes sense.
Introducing Mahlkonig’s Grind by Sync System
Grind-by-Sync technology goes further than just precision grinding - it focuses on interconnectivity. Instead of treating the grinder as an isolated tool, GBS enables communication across the bar setup — bringing automation, alignment, and consistency into daily operations.
What the GBW does well
Before GbW technology, consistency was an even tougher game. Standard grinders grind by time and this could lead to drifts in the grind, which results in inconsistent shots.
Being able to grind-by-weight gave operators on-the-spot accuracy, less waste from over or under-dosing, and overall better control over espresso recipes. But a rising issue occurred over time - staff turnover, menu expansions, multiple outlets… consistency has become a more intricate game, it’s also about coordination.
But what does this really mean?
Where GbS moves the needle
The GbS system doesn’t replace GbW - it’s improved on it. Precise weighing, stable dosing… all this is still assured, but the system does even more.
1. Interconnectivity between grinder and espresso machine
The grinder and espresso machine share the same parameters and recipes via stable wifi connection (La Marzocco models: Strada S, KB90, Linea PB, Linea PB X, Linea Classic S, GB5 S, or GB5 X in AV or ABR configurations) or sync cable (Sanremo models: Café Racer, F18 Multiboiler, F18 SB, D8 PRO, or D8 standard). Just by selecting a certain profile on the espresso machine, the grinder will automatically switch to the same profile and apply the preset grind setting and dose parameters.
2. Human error is dramatically reduced
When the espresso machine dictates the recipe and the grinder follows, the risk of grinding the wrong coffee, applying the wrong settings, or missing a parameter drops significantly. The system ensures that the right profile is always in use.
3. Workflow becomes faster, more intuitive, more efficient
With fewer manual steps, baristas spend less time checking and recalibrating. The result is a smoother bar flow, especially during peak hours.
4. Sets you up to be future-ready
As more equipment becomes connected, GBS lays the groundwork for integrated, data-informed café operations. It’s not just an upgrade — it’s a step toward a smarter, more seamless bar system.
Moving towards the bigger picture
As more equipment becomes connected, GBS lays the groundwork for integrated, data-informed café operations. It’s not just an upgrade — it’s a step toward a smarter, more seamless bar system.
It isn’t about adopting flashy tech. It’s about removing friction, tightening consistency, and giving baristas a more seamless environment to work in.
GbW was a huge upgrade; GbS uses it as a springboard for better and smarter workflow.
